Why we need to be prepared?

You Can Do it!
Why is it important to be prepared?
*Preparedness helps our brains to be able to focus more quickly and act when needed.
*2 out 3 times families will be in different locations when a disaster strikes.  This means you or even your children will have to deal with emergencies alone.  Do you know what          to do?  Do your children?
Step 1
Check out your area.  For example in Cache Valley we could effectively be cut off from   others in a natural disaster.  This means that it might take time for help to arrive.  You          need to be prepared to take care of yourself until then.
Tools to Help
            1) Personal Revelation and Guidance from Heavenly Father- every situation is different and there is no one size fits all.
            2) Take information and personalize it!  INDIVIDUALIZE with your families for your needs.
            3) Keep it SIMPLE
            4) Help each other- we are not alone!

If your neighbors not ready, then you’re not!
Once there was a couple who had decided to go for a hike in Zion’s National Park.  On the way there they decided to stop and buy some fresh fruit for their journey.  The wife really wanted a watermelon, she was insistent enough that the husband agreed.  (However, he promised that he would not be the one to carry it.)  Later, just as the husband predicted, the wife grew tired of carrying the watermelon.  She placed it in a shady place and thought they would get it on their way out.  The couple followed a different path out, leaving the watermelon behind.
Meanwhile, a man who had been hiking and lost for days was near the end of his life.  He had decided to sit down and die, when he suddenly saw a watermelon.  He ate and the watermelon preserved his life until he could find his way to safety.
            What do we learn?
1st- God is in our lives and will help us.
2nd- You never know what skills you might have that can help another.

3rd- You can be a watermelon, too!  Be the person who is there to help another.  But in    order to do that, you have to be able to take care of yourself first.

Being spiritually and emotionally prepared

Spiritually and Emotionally Prepared
By Alan Spendlove

“You can’t put 5 lbs of faith in a bucket, then wait to use it.”
Our Heavenly Father is the most loving, wisest, kindest, etc.  We cheered when we agreed to his plan, to come to earth to gain a body and be experience mortality to grow stronger to become more like him.
“…And when we arrived, we wondered what the shouting was about.” –Neil A. Maxwell
Earth is only hard because we forget the Plan of Happiness.
That which does not kill us makes us feel…..
Sad, depressed, hurt, angry, lonely, frustrated, etc.
And in the process, makes us STRONGER!
“Do not handicap your children by making their lives easy.
                                                            -Robert Heinlan
Enabling and Indulgence messes with our brains.

The Lord will direct you in your own way!
God makes a custom curriculum for each of us.

Emotionally Prepared
We will all go through personal disasters way more often than physical disasters.
These can prepare us or leave us less prepared!

Do Happy Rats Become Addicted?
A study was done to see if rats that are stimulated and happy become addicted.  They were presented with regular water and heroin water.  They chose regular water.  This was compared to rats that were caged, who chose the heroin water.  When the depressed rats were moved to a happy environment many of them began to choose regular water.

Predictions of Happiness
-          Loving home
-          Happy family
-          Lack of corporal punishment
-          Safe environment
-          Affectionate parents
Jesus gave us the perfect example.  He always had time for the children.  He offered unconditional love.
*did you give your child a hug today!
Teach our children when they are young.
Form Christ-like relationships

How to overcome hardship
1) keep the commandments
2) Family Dr.
3) Exercise and Diet
4) Food Supplements
5) Alternative Medicine Practitioners
6) Counselors

Fire Extinguishers

Fire Extinguishers

Check your fire extinguishers for the letters ABC.  This means that your fire extinguisher can handle the following type of fire.
Class A- ordinary (paper, wood, etc.)
Class B- Grease Fires
Class C- Electrical (unplugging makes it a class A fire)
The number before the A- How many gallons needed to put out the fire.
The number before the B/C- The square foot area size of fire that the extinguisher can manage.
If your fire extinguisher is not big enough for the fire- get out!

I learned this personally while practicing with the fire extinguishers.  My extinguisher stopped before the fire was put out.  It was a scary and helpless feeling to be so close to the fire and have my fire extinguisher not work.  Make sure that it works and that it can handle the fire!

Steps
1) Call 911
2) Decide if your extinguisher can handle the fire
3) Shake your fire extinguisher monthly
4) Check annually and possibly replace

5) Aim slightly above the base of fire.  (Especially with a grease fire, you can potentially splash the grease out and spread.  You want the retardant to fall over it.)

First Aid

The Killer ABC’s
Airway:  Open the airway by placing two fingers on the chin and forward and tip the head back.
Blood:  Stop the Bleeding.  Put Direct Pressure to stop the blood flow. Elevate.  Tourniquet.
Circulation (Shock):  Elevate feet, keep warm.

Bandaging
Use Sterile bandages.  If sterile is not available then use the cleanest available.
(In an emergency rinse out wound with contact solution)
Regular and Pressure Dressing
1) Lay ‘sterile’ dressing on wound
2) Direct pressure to stop the bleeding.
3) When bleeding has stopped or significantly slowed wrap the bandage.
4) To create a pressure dressing, twist the wrap over the cut as you wrap it.

Figure 8 (for joints)
1) Place a ‘sterile’ dressing.
2) Wrap a regular “anchor” wrap around dressing.
3) Then cross in a figure 8 shape to.

Tourniquet
Write down the time and date! (use a black sharpie marker and write on the forward.  It won’t be missed)
Find lower pulse (turn until the bleeding slows significantly or you can’t feel the pulse.
Splinting
Triangle bandage (upper shoulder or arm)
1) Tie a knot in triangle point.
2) Place knot behind elbow
3) Raise up arm (hand size)
4) tie behind neck
5) wrap a bandage around arm and body to prevent movement

Infant Choking
1) Sit
2) Support head and angle the infant’s body down
3) 5 back blows (in between shoulder blades)
4) Rotate Infant
5) 5 chest thrusts (two fingers push up on chest.
6) Rotate infant again * repeat
7) Continue until infant loses consciousness then begin CPR or object is able to be removed.

CPR
1) Check for open airway
2) Check for a pulse
3) If the answer is NO for both begin CPR
4) Only use breaths with a barrier device
5) Chest compressions (find nipple line, push the middle of the sternum)
6) Compressions should be 1 ½ inches to 2 inches deep.
7) Push in time to the song “Stayin’ Alive”
8) Make sure that you pull back enough to allow for recoil and heart to fill
9) 30 compressions
10) 2 breaths (if barrier present)

* For an infant use two fingers or thumbs

Emergency Home Response

Home Response

Before an Emergency
            1) Find your Gas Meter
            2) Have a Gas meter shut off tool, attached to your gas meter.

            3) Find your Circuit Breakers
            4) Find your water shut off valve.
            5) Know how to turn all of them off!
            6) Do a 360* around your house- know what it looks like.
After an Emergency
            1) Do a 360* around your house.
                          - Use your senses
                                    1) What do you see?
-is your home off the foundation or leaning
                                                - are there large cracks
-is it significantly different compared to your original 360?
                                    2) What do you hear?
                                                - funny creaks and moans?
-a hissing that would indicate a gas leak?
                                    3) What do you smell?
                                                - can you smell something funny? smoke, Natural or propane gas?
            2) If everything is fine then you can enter and shelter in your home.
            3) However, WHEN IN DOUBT, STAY OUT!    Go with your gut!
            4) If you see, hear, or smell anything…
                                    1) Shut off the Gas Meter
                                                -Make sure your tool fits
-Turn the loop until the holes align (off)!

-call gas company and fire department
-open the doors to air out
                                    2) Circuit Breaker
                                                - The spark from the electricity can create an explosion with natural gas, that is why if there is leak you need to turn off the electricity.
                                                - It is safer to shut off individual breakers before the main breaker.
                                    3) Water
                                                - turn off if evacuated or leaking.

How to Shelter in Place

How long can water be stored

How long can water be stored?

Some sources say every 6 months.  If the correct conditions are met water can be stored 5
                Years or longer
-          A good/clean water container is used
-          A clean contaminant free filling process is used
-          A tight seal is maintained
-          High quality treated water or added treatment is used at the time of filling
-          The container is maintained tightly closed until use.

Filtration after Storage

Filter with a good quality carbon filter before drinking will remove chemicals producing better tasting and healthier water.

Water Containers

Water Containers
(Only use commercial food-grade water storage containers)

                BEFORE FILLING
                1) Wash the storage container with dish washing soap and water rinse completely.
                2) Sanitize the container by adding a solution made by mixing 1 tsp. of unscented liquid chlorine bleach per quart of water or 1 cup bleach in 5 gallons of water for large containers.
                3) Cover the container and shake it well so that the sanitizing bleach solution touches all inside surfaces of the container.
                4) Wait at least 30 seconds then pour the sanitizing solution out of the container.
                5) Let the empty sanitized container air-dry before use OR rinse the empty container with clean, safe water that already is available.
                6) Then- Fill the container with clean or treated water using a food quality hose which has been protected from contamination.

                Avoid
Containers that cannot be sealed tightly
                Containers that can break
Second-hand containers that have had chemicals (i.e. bleach containers)
Second-hand plastic, cardboard, jugs and containers previously used to store milk or fruit juice.

                Proper Storage

Label as drinking water with date
Keep in fairly cool and constant temperature
Do not store in direct sunlight
Do not store in areas with toxic substances such as gasoline or pesticides
Add a barrier between containers and concrete floor

                Treatment

Adding chlorine dioxide as the water is filling the container will assure bacteriological safety throughout storage process.

Use a 'bung' wrench to open the 50 gallon water tanks

When filling water tanks do not use a regular garden hose, but use a "water hose" such as a hose you would use for an RV.

Three Tier Water Storage

Three tier water storage system
1.  GRAB AND RUN- store water in small containers that can carried on your person or in a 72 hour kit.
2. BULK HOME WATER STORAGE- Store enough water for your family for a month during a short term disaster.
3.  Water Treatment Method- Have equipment available to treat or filter contaminated water and make it safe to drink.

Treatment
-Chlorine dioxide kills or inactivates the microorganisms
-Coconut Carbon removes the excess chlorine and associated taste and odor.
-Micro filtration with cyst removal capability is very important for removing               Cryptosporidium and Giardia in surface water such as lakes and streams.

Prepare an emergency supply
-Storing 2 gallons of water per day for each person and each pet.  (You may need more for hot  climates, pregnant women, sick people)
-Store at least a two week supply for each person or pet:  28 gallons minimum
-Store chlorine dioxide or 5.25% unscented liquid household chlorine bleach (rotated annually) to disinfect you water.

Water Containers
(Only use commercial food-grade water storage containers)
